Artist Do Ho Suh (51) has been selected as the recipient of the main prize of the Kim Sechoong Sculpture Award. Gwon Osang (39) has been chosen as the recipient of the Kim Sechoong Young Sculptor Award.
The Kim Sechoong Memorial Society (Chairperson: Kim Nam-jo) announced that Do Ho Suh and Gwon Osang were selected respectively as the recipients of the main prize and the young sculptor award for the 27th Kim Sechoong Sculpture Award. Meanwhile, no recipient was selected for the Korean Art Writing and Publishing Award.
The jury consisted of Uhm Tae-jung (Chair, sculptor), Jung Hyung-min (Director of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea), Ahn Kyu-chul (Professor at the Korea National University of Arts), Kim Bok-ki (Publisher of Art in Culture), and Kim Sun-jung (Deputy Director of Art Sonje Center).
Main prize recipient Do Ho Suh is a global artist who works between Seoul, London, and New York. Through installation works that use clothing, houses, and rooms as motifs, he explores the mobility and transformability of private space in a time when nomadic lives—shaped by migration and travel—have become increasingly common.
Young Sculptor Award recipient Gwon Osang is well known for his “photo sculpture,” in which human figures are constructed using lightweight materials such as Styrofoam and then covered with photographs. He has also experimented with the flattening of three-dimensional form by cutting out advertisement images from magazines, placing them upright on the floor, and photographing them again.
The Kim Sechoong Sculpture Award was established to commemorate the achievements of Kim Sechoong (1928–1986), a first-generation sculptor of Korean contemporary sculpture who served as a professor at Seoul National University.
Previous recipients of the main award include Shim Moon-seup, Choi Man-lin, Uhm Tae-jung, Park Suk-won, Cho Sung-mook, Kim Young-won, Park Choong-heum, Kim In-kyum, Lim Choong-sup, and Lee Bul.
Recipients of the Young Sculptor Award include Won In-jong, Lee Sang-hyun, Moon In-soo, Lee Soo-hong, Lee Jae-hyo, Kim Jong-gu, Jung Seo-young, Choi Woo-ram, and Haegue Yang.
The award ceremony will take place on the 24th at 5 p.m. at the Baekbeom Kim Koo Memorial Hall.
